Powers of Ten - Ray and Charles Eames and the beauty of scale

Dear Parents,

Cogitanians have been taken yesterday on a journey of power of ten. We have first made sure they understand what a scale is, and then I have asked: What do you think, how many numbers are between 0 and 1. There were only two answers, one that there is none and the other that there is one‼️

I have drawn a circle, made it a pizza and cut it in half. Your kids needed to put the number on a number line. They seemed surprised that it would have to be between 0 and 1, I kept cutting it into 1/4th, 1/8th, 1/16th and as I asked the question about how many numbers there are between 0 and 1, you could see their faces expressing a eureka moment till I heard: “Oh my, infinite!”. This was one of the most beautiful moments. 😀

Before Helga showed them the Powers of Ten you tube, we have introduced them to the exponents. Again, it was an “aha” moment to all that revealed what happens if 10 is multiplied by itself more than one time. It took everyone a while to understand it. It also revealed how little trust our Cogitanians have in themselves as mathematicians - an absolute subject and goal to change!

In order for them to understand that the world has packed SO MUCH life in the scale from 0-1, which is where we are heading → atomic scale, we needed this wonderful and may be somewhat challenging session to happen.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families. May peace and love dominate your time of Thanksgiving break.

Grateful for your trust in Cogitania,
Joanna
