reduction and oxidation

Dear Parents,

In our session today we reviewed oxidation / reduction reactions, and their use in batteries. Your kids then worked through how to force the reverse reaction, and subsequently set up a reaction cell which can be used to electroplate. We then electroplated copper onto a quarter, while working through a chemistry problem with identifying the black substance that forms around the quarter. The students managed to both name the compound formed (copper(II) oxide) and the formula (CuO).
