The Science of Technology – Day 2

Today in the Science of Technology, we learned about types of motion, energy and the 4 quantum numbers. The types of motion included translational, rotational, vibrational and electronic. These were discussed by understanding the 4 quantum numbers and how to determine these using the periodic table. We especially focused on the spin quantum number, in which an electron is either spin up or spin down. We discussed how the spins of electrons in a material lead to magnetism, and how magnetism is utilized in storing bits of information in hard drives. It allowed us to expand on magnetism in technology and the students came up with their own applications for magnetic materials.
