An In-Depth Look at Perspective
The focus of this week’s session was to expand upon the basics of linear perspective by tackling complex shapes and different viewpoints.
Students spent the first part of class demonstrating their understanding of the content covered the previous session: reviewing terms and drawing 2D and 3D objects using one and two point perspectives. We talked about their take-home assignment, to observe a familiar environment using sight sticks, which sounded like a positive experience.
We then moved on to discussing and drawing circles, ellipses, and cylinders, as well as three point perspective. Students were asked to reflect upon, what happens when circular objects are viewed at different angles? How are they different or similar to the other shapes we’ve studied? Can you think of examples of three point perspective in everyday life?
The class ended with visual examples of how the observational techniques the kids have been learning can be combined and applied outside our classroom.
Optional Homework: Using your knowledge of perspective, draw a building or a still life comprised of differently shaped objects.
Reminder: When creating your drawing, especially if executed over multiple days, be sure to stand or sit in the exact same spot.
