Flower Pollination and Fertilization

At Cogitania’s Saturday Botany workshop fourth graders continued their exploration of flower structure and function and learned about plant reproduction, namely, pollination and fertilization.
We reviewed the names of the flower parts and then discussed the purpose of each part to learn how pollen makes it’s way from the stamen’s anther to the stigma and finally to the ovary to fertilize the flower’s ovules.

For the hands-on activity we viewed online pictures of Peruvian lily flower parts and then looked at the lily parts under a microscope.

Next week we will visit the Boston Museum of Science to continue our study of pollination at the pollination exhibit and then will attend the chocolate exhibition to explore the history, culture, and science of chocolate.
