Speed, Acceleration and Jerk

Today we learned about the three derivatives of position (speed, acceleration and jerk) and how they relate to each other. We observed that the slope of one plot can be used to determine the slope of the next derivative. We figured that if we can determine the acceleration and mass of the rocket, we can use Newtons 2nd Law F=ma to find the force created by our baking-soda and vinegar engine. We were able to measure the mass with a scale, but a successful launch combined with a good video recording of said launch proved elusive. For example, our final launch was a massive success, but was lost over a neighboring porch and wasn't properly framed in the shot.
Next class we will do a couple more launches and review the footage to finally determine our launch thrust!
