A cogitania review of applied biochemistry topics
Today we concluded our unit on applied biochemistry with a student-led review.
After discussing key vocabulary from the unit as a group, each student chose their favorite question from the unit and created a model to explain its answer. Jack focused on how global warming leads to wildfires, which release even more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, worsening the problem. Sophia compared the different strategies that bacteriophages use to reproduce.
Magnus and Jasper focused on emerging biotechnologies, with Magnes modeling somatic cell nuclear transfer and Jasper showing how gene therapy enables cystic fibrosis patients to produce a functioning channel protein. Tomer took a step back to consider such biotechnologies' ethical implications by modeling how genetically modifying human embryos might affect society.
