Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle

I have introduced your kids to the Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle with his 4 big questions.

  • What encourages societies to go well and for people to have a happy or unhappy life?

  • What is art for?

  • What are friends for?

  • How do ideas cut through - rhetoric.

We looked closer at Aristotle’s idea of the “golden mean” and his belief that with better teachers (philosophers) and more empathy (art and rhetoric) there will be less evil people. We moved to Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”. We have discussed “the idea and ideal” vs. “the shadows” people have a tendency to live in thinking of it as already a limit to their existence.
