The science and art of our makeup

Dear Parents,

We had an “out of the box” exploration of our human physiology. Our session started with a question I posed to the girls: What are we made out of? They took some time to write their response in their note book, followed by sharing it with their peers. Some of them started with an analytical response of body parts, living and dead cells, minerals and vitamins, tissues—>organs——>systems. it was great to see how different their perspectives can already be!

I invited them to think with me about the 3 states of matter and we have located which state of matter we are made out of, where and why. We discovered that we are ALL 3 states, solid, liquid and gas!

At the end, I introduced them to corn starch, a solid when dry, as neither a solid nor a liquid when water is added and finally, we talked about the properties and moved organically from what is science into art making. It was FUN! Please enjoy the session photos.
