We did some reviewing of the basics of chemistry that the students will need to know for the future sessions, such as the structure of the atom, the periodic table (including the 4 new elements added to the periodic table 4 days ago!), chemical bonds and why reactions happen. We also learned about solid state chemistry, why we see colors and light and how to convert between Kekule and bond-line notation for organic structures. The students then first synthesized silver nanoparticles and began culturing bacterial cultures, with silver nanoparticles applied, to see their effectiveness as antibacterials. We will analyze these results on Wednesday. The students also synthesized sodium potassium tartrate for making Rochelle crystals. These will be analyzed on Friday.
