Transpiration and the Movement of Water in Plants

At Cogitania’s Saturday Botany workshop fourth graders learned about Transpiration and the Movement of Water in Plants.

We listened to a chapter from the book “The hidden Life of Trees” about the movement of water in plants and a video about Transpiration.

We conducted an experiment to measure water loss through the leaves of four Begonia plants. We had a control plant and simulated other conditions for the other 3 plants including wind, light and heat, and humidity. Although there was minimal water loss via transpiration during the 90 minute class timeframe, we discovered that the light and heat affected plant lost the most water through Transpiration.
