Controlling variables

This Monday we worked on using our experimental data from the week before to optimize our catapults. We discussed the concept of variables and the value of minimizing variables in experimentation. We also discussed the importance of recording and analyzing experimental data.

After reviewing the data and thinking about the results of the week before the students decided to design their own “Ideal” catapult. Additionally, to reduce the variables in the testing procedure the students decided to have one student test everyone’s new catapult.
The results were a dramatic improvement on the lengths of the previous week.

The students recorded 3 data points for each catapult then cleaned up and we had a brief discussion about kinetic and potential energy in preparation for next week.
