Hiding the Earth Behind Your Thumb

Dear Parents,

A precious session today! Your girls have been exposed to the concept of size, scale and proportion on an astronomical scale. Using a toilet paper role they have been marking in an accurate scale distances of all the 8 planets of our solar system from the sun! In order to do that, they needed to find a common unit for the distance. We have flexed their sense of time and space. I am thrilled to see how willing they are to embrace these difficult ideas! They have also learned all the names of the planets in sequence.

On a dry lakebed in Nevada, a group of friends build the first scale model of the solar system with complete planetary orbits: a true illustration of our place in the universe. A film by Wylie Overstreet and Alex Gorosh alexgorosh.com wylieoverstreet.com Feel like supporting more films like this?

A behind-the-scenes look at the film "To Scale: The Solar System."

It will be great if they could see a science video on our solar system, listen more about each planet. there is only so much we can do once a week in 75 min! We've left you a short video that will leave you bewildered at the incredible size of our little backyard in space, our solar system.

Enjoy the pictures!
