Touching the Sky

We have moved your girls from the ocean and its life  into a totally different realm of zoology - birds! Michelle, our amazing zoologist introduced us to monk parakeets, scientific name: myiopsitta Monachus - a specie of birds by accident brought into NYC with a shipment from South America, mostly Argentina. Living in a much warmer climate these birds had a choice to die or adapt, guess what, they did adapt!

Your girls have watched them live in their natural habitat as well as in their adopted one. We have observed the necessary changes that occurred, especially in nesting. Your girls noticed that these birds are REAL architects, they build nests that resemble condominiums, which means, there will be multiple bird “families” living in one nest. Michelle have studied the nesting in the past and have introduced your girls to a scientific method of researching a bird nest building. Your girls were asked to imagine being a monk parakeet carried the branches necessary to make a nest. We asked them to evaluate the weight of the branches versus their body mass. Eventually they were presented with a challenge to weave a nest from twigs themselves. One of the students announced: “I know how to weave but not with twigs”, my response to it was, well, it is not about knowing in science but by figuring out how!
